If you’ve watched the Netflix documentary “Tinder Swindler”, you already know what this concept is. Don’t worry if you don’t because I am about to tell you.
First of all, this documentary shows the real story of three different women who were defrauded by a man named Simon Leviev, who was a 31-year-old international fraudster. Since he was in his late teens, he made a living for himself by scamming people out of their money.
His birth name was actually Shimon Hayut, but he changed it. In order to do all his schemes, he had several false identities through the years. This Netflix film shows how he managed to trick three women by pretending he was the son of Lev Leviev, a billionaire man and the CEO of a diamond construction company, LLL Diamonds.
Since this documentary aired on Netflix, a lot of people started to tell their stories on how they were tricked by Tinder Swindlers. As much as these experiences might seem invented, they are actually true.
Without further ado, let’s see these 3 shocking Tinder scams that you’ll have to see to believe!
Kéllé Bryan is a 46-year-old English singer and actress, who is known for being a member of the girl group Eternal. In 2018, she started playing the role of Martine Westwood in the soap opera “Hollyoaks” on Channel 4.
She is also one of the hosts of a talk show called Loose Women. During an episode where they discussed the new Netflix documentary, the star started to tell her own traumatic experience.
Kéllé said that she can relate to Simon Leviev’s victims given the fact that when she was younger, she helped out a former lover financially. She added the fact that she was “young and dumb” and this is what she thought love was.
The celeb stated that her then-boyfriend lost his job and she wanted to help by supporting him financially. After a while, she thought that her partner might feel bad asking her for money, so she gave him a credit card.
Kéllé Bryan said that her boyfriend made her feel isolated from friends and family and she was totally under his control. She explained how things deviated, from small amounts of money to a lot of expensive purchases, such as cars.
The star saw what was actually going on after she received a call from the bank, asking questions about several acquisitions that were made.
…What can we say? We are happy that she found a way to move on from this crazy experience!
If you thought that people are the only ones who are tricking other people, you are wrong! That is because there are several bots that use a lot of photos and names of real humans.
They are tricking Tinder users into thinking that they are real, in order to endorse a video game created in China. After a member messages them, the software replies by saying “hey :)”.
After that, it asks the user what they are doing and when it’s asked back, it says “I’m still recovering from last night 🙂 Relaxing with a game on my phone, castle clash. Have you heard about it?”.
Regardless of what the Tinder member might reply, the bot “attacks” and sends them a link that has an address that begins with “www.tinderverified.com/”. This is a trick used to make the URL appear true.
After a while, the bot gets bored and decides to end the conversation by saying “play with me a bit and you just might get a phone number”.
A man from North Carolina, David Short, told BBC that he has been one of the bots’ targets for a while. He added the fact that this makes him question if the girls he finds attractive are actually real or are just other bots.
He also said that he is a veteran Tinder user, but he might stop using the app on a regular basis if he keeps being targeted by these bots.
Besides endorsing games, these bots are also looking to make sites dedicated to adults popular and to turn these people into paying members.
In accordance with Satnam Narang, senior security response manager at Symantec, these spambots choose their victims and after that, they send them a flirty text, for example, “Wanna eat cookie dough together some time?”.
After a simple conversation, the spambot is curious if Tinder has certified the user. It’s not referring to the blue checkmark that usually appears on celebrities’ profiles on social media.
Furthermore, the spambots send the user a link to a foreign website which involves some combinations of words regarding the verification, safety, protection, date codes, and even background checks.
The majority of these websites have the word “tinder” in their URLs, in order to give off the impression that they are real and official. When the users do what the spambots are telling them to do, they might find a lot of revealing pictures with several women. The sites might say that Tinder members will be able to contact these women via social media, Skype, or email after they verify themselves.
…Here comes the trickiest part!
In order to do this, users have to submit personal information, such as credit card data. If they don’t read all the information they receive, they might overlook the fine print, which says that there is a special offer that gives them access to several adult-themed websites.
However, if they don’t cancel their subscription within the time allowed, they will be taxed with more than US $100 per month. Satnam Narang suggests that people should not believe messages like this, because there is no such thing as a Tinder verification website or safe dating.
You have to keep in mind that spambots are extremely creative and they can trick a lot of people into signing up for different websites or services.
If you see something like this, it is better to report these accounts to Tinder!
P.S. Don’t forget to read the fine print on any site or service you want to use! Do that before you decide to sign-up!
