Building a strong relationship nowadays is one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of a happy life. If you’ve reached that point in your relationship where you say “please don’t forget to buy toilet paper on the way home” more than you say “I love you”, this article is for you.
Even if the honeymoon phase ship has sailed a long time ago, that doesn’t mean your relationship can’t be romantic anymore. There are a few things you should say to your partner every day, making sure that they know and feel how much you appreciate their presence in your life!
There’s no instruction manual when it comes to building your ideal relationship, and oh, how easy it would be if there were… However, there are some things that you can say every day to your significant other and pretty soon you will be the cute couple that makes all your friends sick.
“Good morning” is such an underrated phrase that can make your significant other’s day way better. However, it’s hard to be so energized and full of joy early in the morning, especially when you’re not a morning person that wakes up smiling, without bags under their eyes, ready to go for a run. Does that person even exist? I’m they do and I take my hat off to them
Leaving them to one side, the rest of us that are lazier and love sleeping, waking up isn’t so romantic. It’s normal though, we’re humans and we have busy lives, it ok to be tired and stressed about your daily to-do list.
However, a simple “good morning, love/sweetie/sunshine” will help remind your partner how much they mean to you and how important they are in your life. I know it sounds cheesy, but waking up to your loved one every day is such a blessing and it shouldn’t be taken for granted.
You yelled at them for not buying the toilet paper you asked them to buy. You’ve damaged their favorite blouse by turning it pink in the wash by accident. You forgot to call their mother on her birthday. No matter what went wrong, be the bigger person and admit where you went wrong and apologize.
You need to swallow your pride and tell them you’re sorry, even when we talk about small things like the ones I have mentioned above. You can say you’re sorry even if you’re not the cause of their distress, if they had a bad day at work, it feels nice to receive some comfort from the one you love.
A simple “I’m sorry” shows you care about their feelings more than your own stubbornness, it also shows empathy and reminds them that you’re both on the same team, no matter what.
“How was your day?”
Sometimes our busy lives make us forget to ask how the other person’s doing, if everything’s ok or simply to ask them about their day. It’s easy to let yourself be overwhelmed with the stress and dramas when you get comfortable with someone’s presence in your life. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own problems that we forget to check if the person next to us is alright.
It’s important to remember you shouldn’t take anyone for granted. So, if showing that you care means asking your partner “How was your day?” you should ask the damn question!
Asking them the question every day will assure them that you care even about the small things they do, like the salad they’ve eaten at lunch. It’s the small things like this that make a relationship last.
“That’s such a great idea.”
Take the time to reassure them that they are brilliant, intelligent, or any other compliments that you can think of. Make a habit out of complementing your partner at least once a day, whether you’re telling them how proud you are of something they did, or something more simple like, yes, pasta is a great idea for dinner.
You should be your partner’s biggest fan, making them feel happy and loved every day. Positive affirmations and compliments that come from the people closest to you, no matter how small they are, will have a domino effect, making them feel more confident.
“I was thinking about you.”
These five simple words can really make one’s day ten times better. It’s important to let your partner know that they are on your mind even when you’re not together and that you think about them even when you’re busy.
It’s so cute when you see something funny during the day and the first person you want to share it with is them, so let them know that. Inside jokes are a great way to connect with your loved one. Do not underestimate the power of the phrase “I saw something that reminded me of you…” and what positive effects it can have on a relationship.
A relationship isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. You don’t have to agree with your partner all the time just to please them. If you disagree with them, you should say so, as no one wants a yes-man (or woman). That’s because part of respecting your partner is letting them know how you honestly feel about something.
Even if you’re a team, the strength is in the thoughts and actions of its individual members. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind and disagree with them from time to time. Maintain your own opinions but make sure to express them in a respectful manner that won’t hurt the person you love. Think about the fact that your different opinion may offer a new perspective to your partner, a perspective they haven’t thought of before. Believe it or not, they will appreciate your honesty and thank you for it.
Good morning and goodnight are way more important than most people would think! Even if you sleep in the same bed, or for some reason you live in separate houses, take the time to tell your partner goodnight. A 5-minute call or simply a text can make the other person feel special because they know you were thinking of them before going to sleep.
Especially in today’s world, where staying in touch has never been easier. Thanks to our advanced communication technology you’re just one button press away from calling anyone no matter where they are in this big, wide world, therefore you have no excuse for not saying goodnight. Not only you will sleep better, but it also lets them know you thought of them and hope they will have a peaceful night of sleep.
“I love you.”
Last but not least, the three most meaningful and important words in the English language. Use them carefully and don’t waste them on just anyone, because they are only truly meaningful when they come right from the heart.
Even if you don’t consider yourself the romantic type, find a moment to remind your significant other that they are important to you. It doesn’t matter that they already know it or that you said it yesterday, that’s no excuse for you not to say these three words.
Saying “I love you” is definitely the easiest and the more effective way to make someone feel special while keeping that honeymoon spark alive.
